Acton Gig Review from 11-15-02 by Fenton
Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros
Acton Town Hall
OK Guys, Friday night at Acton, London was quite a night!! Me and my girlfriend arrived at the town hall at about 7.20 to be greeted at the front door by firemen ( not bouncers or security) we should have known from then that it was going to be a surreal evening. The hall was a typical large community hall but struct me at that time to be like a wedding reception where you did'ant know anyone but everyone knew each other, these were all (90%)connected to the F.B.U. ( FIRE BRIGADE ) and it was only over the next 3 hours that it slowly started to fill up, the 200 tickets which were available to Strummer fans were only a small fraction of the main audience which was about 500+ the support was made up of a female choir followed by a Fire Brigade band that did cover versions and then finally at about 10.30 Joe & the mesc's walked on stage. After seeing the Clash 9 times and Strummer 6 times this had to be the most subdued greeting i've seen an audience give it was quite clear that there was only a small amount of people that were there only for Strummer.Within the first two numbers i found myself and my partner literally standing right at the front inches away fron Joe and without any major crushing going on. We were feeling honoured to a chance to see Joe in this situation and it almost felt like a private gig,the band seemed quite tired but as usual Joe was giving his all. Joe made reference to the fact that Mick Jones was in the house and that he and his partner had had a baby girl ( called Stella) on the previous Sunday and a large cheer filled the hall, the rest of the set was short but recieved with more enthusiasim as each song went by and then came the finalle!!!!
By this time i had shook hands with Joe as he knealed down at the front of the stage so i was on a high but what was to come was to blow me away, after ' i fought the law' Joe & the mesc's walked off and then returned very quickly and went straight into ' Bankrobber' a minute into the song i looked to the left of the stage ( remember i'm right at the front straight in front of Joe) and to my supprise there is Mick Jones and what almost seemed to be in slow motion i see a roadie walk towards him and place a guitar around his neck !!!! In my intoxicated and by now astonished state i pointed and shouted at the top of my voice MICK JONES !!!! at which point the front of the audience where i was all looked and went absolutely apeshit, we watched as Mick walked on with a massive grin and joined in with Bankrobber, from our point of view it was great to see Joe turn to Mick and they both smiled at each other, he continued to play Whit e Riot and Londons Burning and you could tell Mick was loving every minute, alot of eye contact from Mick and Joe ( probably because i was going completely ape to see them both on stage after twenty odd years!!
Sorry guy's i really have to say " You had to have been there to know what it was like". - by reviewer Fenton taken from Strummer News Message Board
