Gig Reviews - April 6, 2002 St. Ann's Warehouse - Brooklyn, NY

Saturday Show

posted to The Only Message Board That Matters by Amanda

So has no one posted any reviews about the show yet? I dont see any. Well I just got back. And I honestly don't know how a show could be any better than this one was. I loved everything about it. First.. I got to be up front.. a little to the left.. I cant hear out of my one ear but thats an ok price to pay. I really liked the opening band.. Stellastarr or something like that. They were very good in my opinion.

The Mescaleros were amazing. I can't compare them to any of the other nights since I wasnt there... but I thought that they- Joe especially was just going crazy. At least compared to the show I saw in Philly this year. He was dancing a lot... and at one point he went to the edge of the stage and stepped one foot out onto the partition thing that keeps the crowd back. The bouncer looked pretty nervous and held him up and when he tried to step back onto stage he almost lost his balance.. but it turned out ok and he got back without breaking anything. I believe I saw his wife there-I think it was her she looks liek the pictures I've seen of her. She came out in front and took a picture or two. Bob Gruen was there taking pictures too. And some guy that I dont know his name.. was recording the show and he is supposed to be putting in online at www.punkcast.com I believe. and I checked out the site.. it's not there yet.. but the options on the other ones that are posted are streaming the video, download, and still photos and it seems to be free. So.. definitly check that out... and if I can download it and have it forever.. that would be amazing.

My friends that I went with were amazed at the Meskys... they thought it was amazing that they all played so many instruments. They were so impressed and loved the show. At the beginning of the show someone gave him a poster that said "This is still about free speach" on one side and Thank you Meskys on the other.. or something to that effect.. Joe seemed pretty happy... he demanded that people pass it forward.. and he showed the band the thank you side and had it displayed with the one that they got on Monday I think. I was really impressed. I was just so overwhelmed by the greatness of it all and I can't focus on all the stuff.. but.. it was great and hopefully you all can watch the video.

Again, a brilliant performance ! And the audience responded accordingly. Contrary to the previous two nights, where I watched the show from the stage left backstage area, I moved to stage right (not very far from El and her friend T...) to get a better view. The crowd was totally into it, a mix of Old Gangsters and new converts. This 12/14 (?) year old boy standing beside me throughout the gig, his eyes wide open ; what an introduction he had to the world of music !

Walk on The Wild Side was even better than Friday. White Man... what can I say... Now that I've heard Lose This Skin live, I can die in peace. Global... Skanking to Pressure Drop... Words can express how privileged I felt of being there.

Maybe my chat with Tymon about backing vocals being the low point in the Meskys performance made its effect (although he hinted that they were working on it), but the vocal harmonies seemed to have gone through a vast improvement !

I finally shook hands with Martin ! Gosh, I'm still all emotional about it ! Took a few notes and here's a (in)complete list of the instruments I've spotted him playing: organ, keybords, flute, spanish guitar, harmonica, [sax]... Please feel free to add more it you can.
