totally agree, last night was amazing and the venue was surreal...a real 60's throwback. Smallest crowd for a strummer gig since the virgin megastore signings last summer but it just didn't matter....the band were shit hot and joe was at one with his people. He made a comment about giving up on radio and tv and that the mescaleros would become a working touring band, so give it up for the hardest working band in showbusiness. The encore was incredible...'right you lot lets play some punk rock'....i closed my eyes and it was 1977 again....start yer own riot indeed.....cheers, gadge! - by reviewer Gadgezone taken from Strummer News Message Board
God bless Joe and The Mescaleros, they did TWENTY songs - Shaktar Donetsk, Bhindi Bhagee, Rudi Can't Fail, Tony Adams, White Man, Mega Bottle Ride, Get Down Moses, Police & Thieves, Yalla Yalla, Cool 'n' Out, Police on my Back, Ishen (I think), 1969, Johnny Appleseed, Coma Girl, I Fought The Law, Bankrobber, A Message to you Rudi, London's Burning AND White Riot.
You’re right Wakey, ‘Coma Girl’ is fantastic. "This starts out brilliant", said Joe, introducing it, "but then it degenerates when I start making it up as I go along". If it did you couldn't tell, it ROCKED. I dunno how many people there had heard it but by the end of the 1st verse everyone was bouncing around like it was something off ‘The Clash’. And they played everything I hoped they’d play like ‘Yalla Yalla’ and ‘Bankrobber’. And I loved the way Joe would kneel down respectfully when one of the other guys did a solo bit, and the way Tymon played his violin, legs apart in a martial-arts stance and plucking at the strings with the bow clamped between his teeth. And the backing harmonies on just about everything, they sounded recording-perfect.
And I’m still coming down because of what happened before the gig. It'd just turned dark and I was on the way back from a walk on the beach, and I met Joe wandering down a sidestreet for a walk of his own! So I said ‘Wow, the man I came to Blackpool to see’, and got to shake his hand. It all seemed a bit surreal … I’ll always love Blackpool now. - by reviewer Lisa Marie taken from Strummer News Message Board
