Bridgwater Gig Review from 11-17-02 by Out West
Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros
The Palace
I saw the benefit gig in Joe’s adopted new hometown last night. Visited Bridgwater with a bit of trepidation as it has a rep for being a bit of a violent "one horse town". I needn’t have worried, as it seemed friendly enough last night.
The venue was a smallish nightclub with I would guess a capacity of around 500+ which must have been pretty near sold out. Two support acts. First on were The Visitors who I unfortunately missed. The second was The Vibra Kings who were a fairly standard blues rock outfit.
The band didn’t hit the stage until 22.20. They put on a great show although I think a slightly shorter set than on earlier dates in the tour. The set-list was virtually the same as previous gigs with the exception of the inclusion of Bummed Out City. (With Joe treating the audience to a detailed description of what the song is about!). No White Riot this time though.
Highlights were White Man, Yalla Yalla and Police &Thieves. Low points for me were 1969 and Tony Adams. Not because they were played badly, they weren’t, but because there are other songs I would have much sooner heard.
Funniest moment was fairly early in the set when Joe appeared to be a bit fired up. He took his famous battered old guitar off and threw it hard to the side of the stage at one of the roadies who did well to catch it and hold on to it. Joe acknowledged his gratitude by turning and giving the said roadie the thumbs up.
I still find it a bit disappointing that even after all this time the Mescaleros stuff doesn’t get half the crowd reaction that the old Clash numbers do. Most of the crowd didn't seem to know any of Joe's last two albums. However there was no trouble, everyone had a good time and I should imagine a fair bit of money was raised. - taken from the Strummer News Message Board by reviewer Out West
