Hastings Gig Review from 11-20-02 by Pete

Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros
Hastings Pier
Just got back from Joe and the Mescaleros gig at Hastings Pier (that hasn't really hosted a concert since the Pistols/Buzzcocks/Stranglers in 1977-9).
Smallish crowd, ran a bit late, so short sets from local support and the Raveonettes (Danish Strokes-ish 4-piece - great songs but levels all asquiff (probably 'cos they didn't arrive till 7.something pm hence doors not till 8.30 - Scott was checking the mix alright before the main act came on!). Joe & Co came on at 9.45pm.
A word about the venue - cack! - no lighting on stage and disco-type lighting 24/7 on audience.
No Topper (see prev Strummernews post!) but Johnny Green in attendance
Slightly abbreviated set included Shaktar, Bhindee, Bummed Out City, Rudie CF, Mega BR (better & better every time heard), Police & T, Tony A (Joe wanted GDMoses first!), GDM (more fantastic each play!), Johnny A, Police On MB, a new song (sorry can't remember name but v. good) Cool'n'out, Coma Girl (nailed),
Encore (unfortunately too much watch-watching necessary!) - Message to you Rudy + ("in the chord of E"!)- WHITE RIOT - I've seen the Clash once (Lewisham Odoen Feb 1980) and Joe & the Mescs 8 times (London Astoria Nov 1999, Brighton Nov 2001, Birmingham Nov 2001, Brixton Nov 2001, Fleadh June 2002, Cambridge August 2002 and Acton Nov 2002 (bastard last train), and last night, but I've never heard it live before so it was much enjoyed!!)
This band are the best - I've promised myself to do the whole tour next time and to take my wife (who's getting there!) to NYC or Dublin!! - by reviewer Pete taken from Strummer News Message Board
