Liverpool Gig Review from 11-22-02 by Simms

Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros
Liverpool University
Went to the Liverpool gig on Friday. Joe was supported by a band called the Bandits (I think). I was stood outside as they were playing, but if my ears heard me right, they did a cover of the Guns of Brixton.
Joe was excellent. The best I've seen him. The band has got tighter and more confident. The drummer was superb, and it reminds me of Joe saying that the Clash were able to do what they did because of Topper. Simon Stafford is definately Mr. Underrated. He played bass for most of the gig but played some crazy guitar on Bankrobber, and trombone on Rudy of course. He is also very passionate when he does his backing vocals, especially on Police and Thieves. On an earlier post, somebody said that 1969 was Joes weakest song. Not tonight, it was brilliant!
Tosh, I think you've forgotten about Rudie Can't Fail, White Man, White Riot, Cool 'n' out, and Get Down Moses. Mind you, I can only just remember myself, I was pretty hammered as well. Song of the night was White Man, closely followed by Dakar Meantime. No signs of Joe slowing down, if anything, he looked more fired up than ever. Got a feeling the new album is going to be a killer!
