Recommended Artists
A Tribe Called Quest - Joe has been known to talk about "Tribe" in interviews as one of his "old skool" favorites.
Andres Landero - Columbia's very own Andres Landero was a major inspiration for Joe on "Rock Art and the X-Ray Style". I was finally able to locate some Andres Landero here. Go to www.tropimusic.com so get some of his music!
Brian Setzer Orchestra - Check out one of the all time greats of Rockabilly who formed "The Stray Cats". Joe played a show with him in August of last year. You'll often catch Strummer fans with good taste jamming to the Brian Setzer Orchestra - "Stray Cat rock in Bulawayo"!
Fugazi - Joe considers this to be one of the only true punk bands left. Give Fugazi a listen and you will soon know why.
Ian Brown - Former singer with the Stone Roses, Ian Brown's solo work is notable for it's eclectic mix of various musical genres. Ian Brown was on the same bill as Joe for the Move Festival on July, 12th in Manchester as well as T in the Park.
King Tubby - The King of dub. King Tubby's ever eclectic mix of sounds an rhythms earn him the uncontested crown of dub. My favorites include his work with the "Soul Syndicate".
Los Fabulosos Cadillacs - Argentina's Los Fabulosos Cadillacs are highly recommended. Check out their music and pick up a copy of their cover of The Clash's "Revolution Rock" when you get a chance.
Manu Chao - Many have compared Joe Strummer's work on "Global A Go-Go" to Manu Chao's recent stuff. His music is highly recommended. If you liked "Global A Go-Go", then you will probably like Manu Chao.
Mikey Dread - Mikey Dread's work with the Clash is very well known. He worked with them on "Black Market Clash" and "Sandinista!" among other projects. His unique voice and radio show "Dread at the Controls" earned him a place in Jamaicam music history. Check out his website for more info on this reggae legend.
Nina Simone - Known as the "High Priestess of Soul" Nina Simone's music covered topics from songs about racism like "Mississippi God Damn" and civil rights with songs like "Why? The King of Love is Dead" "Baby Brown" and "Images". She also did notable covers of Bob Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". Her unique mixture of jazz and blues as well as her legendary status makes Nina Simone a recommended artist. She is listed as an inspiration for the Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros album "Global A Go-Go". "Nina Simone over Sierra Leone!"
R.L. Burnside - This old blues singer has some of the best straight up, in your face blues around. Check out his new album. Burnside played with Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros which was later on HBO's Reverb. Martin Slattery has also worked on some of RL's albums.
U-Roy - Some consider U-Roy to be the inventor of DJ-ing. Working with King Tubby in the 60's and 70's he began to talk over musical tracks to create a style of music that was all it's own. Joe references U-Roy on the track "Global A Go-Go", "For some anti-gravity mixing, with two dub plates of U-Roy..."
